The Lord of the Internet: The Return of the 56k

(Not that I’m implying I’m the lord of the Internet, I just have to be consistent with my strange fixation to make everything I write on here vaguely Lord of the Rings related! In fact if anyone is the lord of the Internet, it’d probably be sir Tim Berners-Lee.) It’s been ages since my last post and apart from more cinema outings and letting Oblivion take over my life, I haven’t really been up to much. There has been my almost eternal battle with insomnia, which has been a rollercoaster ride of bearable and not so bearable, but my bleary eyed nights of non-sleep aren’t too interesting, so before the irony begins and I send you all to sleep I’ll stop writing about that.

Well, I ended my student life by being dragged kicking and screaming from Scarborough a few days ago, to live what I think will probably be a very unpleasant time at home. Not only am I separated from the intensely cool people that I used to live with, I have no money and very few friends here which limits my enjoyment somewhat, especially now I have absolutely nothing to do. Of course finding a job is on the top of my list, but even that is frustrating to the max as my 56k modem seems to be steam powered and throws a fit at advanced tasks such as checking e-mail and general browsing. It just took me about 20 minutes and having to reconnect twice just to check my e-mail. To top it off, I know that all of my previous housemates will be having a fantastic time this Saturday, due to the fact that Byrdfest is looming and I can’t even afford the measly £18 train fare to get there and back. Sorry I can’t make it guys. But instead of doing nothing, I’ll be off to another smaller bbq in Bedford with mum in an effort to get to know some of my family members more. I’d much rather be at home sulking than getting the whole “Oh look how big he is” thing which, for my auntie, never seems to get old. That’s rather a large moan, so I’ll end that. I do hope it’s not breaching the Geneva Convention against large moans, only time will tell. I will say this, I never thought to say that I’d miss Scarboria, but I really do. It is nice to be back in my newly refurbished room complete with proper desk unit, rather than a drawers unit with the top drawer upturned for my keyboard and mouse!

So as I have nothing to do now apart from finding a job and writing pointless blog posts, I might consider writing Tom’s book of really bad jokes, if I can remember all the particularly terrible ones!

  • Matt H
I'm off to the party now as well :) See you lot there!
  • Heh seems you are now where I was a year ago. I can only hope you find a job soon, as it is only going to get increasingly unbearable. It is the post-uni period that compelled me to start blogging as I was thoroughly bored and wanted an outlet for some chronic whinging. We can no doubt expect your posts to be more moan-filled than previous efforts as you traverse the choppy seas of the job market.

Still, best of luck with it all. Atleast you have Coeface to kick about when he isn't working and you might be able to meet up with Eggbert on one of the rare occassions he isn't at work. Are any of the BedfordSHIRE massive around for you to visit? Though, I guess lack of cash is going to impede any such visits even if they are.

Atleast once you have graduated you can sign on for dole money, which will at the very least allow you to get broadband again. Going back to 56k really is like going back to the stone age; sure you can probably survive off the raw meat from a dead pteryodactyl, but it's much nicer just to have steak pie and chips - mmm steak...

Anyway, keep us posted as to how all your (mis)adventures go with regards to job hunting and everything else. Hope it all sorts itself out sooner rather than later.
  • ill be training it, but if necesary i can come and carry you to the party (or donate some train fare from my *ahem* new job!)..

    so theres another lift!
  • How far from chris's are you anyway? I'll be driving up so could come collect you.

In fact - looking at you're location - i'm sure me or Garner could pick you up on the way through!! :S
